Lucas is at peace. Lucas passed away early Sunday morning, January 30th, 2011 surrounded by his family and friends. His spirit to fight, to challenge, to live every moment to the fullest resonates within us as we celebrate his life. Thank you all for your support and heart felt messages during this very difficult time.

Continuing Lucas’ spirit and drive to help others, we are once again participating in the annual Ride To Conquer Cancer. In memory of Lucas we will be riding on Team Philmore to raise funds for research, medicines and treatments that have extended Lucas’s (and others) quality of life many years longer than imagined at the time of diagnosis. We will continue to raise awareness and contribute to those in need and those in treatment for cancer. This is what we ride for. Life.

Please visit our team page and consider donating in memory of Lucas and his courageous fight against small cell cancer. Funds raised in The Ride to Conquer Cancer will support breakthrough research, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care made possible through BC Cancer Foundation, a leader in cancer research and care. Stay tuned for more updates as we train for our ride!

The family and friends of Lucas Spata will be holding an auction on January 14th to benefit The Spata Family Fund. After 18 months of cancer free bliss, Lucas’s cancer returned in both the brain and the original site, the sinuses. Lucas continued to fight the cancer with Nicole’s support and unfortunately has run out of treatment options.

His wife Nicole and their 3 year old son Jacob will not only lose their beloved husband and father, but will also be facing the world alone without the financial boost that most life insurance benefits can help with. Lucas unfortunately missed the probationary cut off period by 8 days for eligibility when diagnosed in 2005.

Any amount can help. The cost of hospice, palliative care, the funeral, and loss of Lucas’ income will be difficult on Nicole and Jacob. Friends and Family of Nicole and Lucas have planned this auction to provide Nicole and Jacob with the financial reassurance they deserve so she can work on coping with the loss of the love of her life and help see Jacob through the hardship as well.

This family deserves the best and every little bit you can contribute is a huge help!

Please visit spatafamily.com for donations and detailed information on this event.
We thank you for your continued support and hope to see you at the auction!

The concept was one that Lucas and the Impossibility Fund couldn’t be more thankful for. On top of that, with over $300 raised the Fund will be giving books to these families - books to inspire all children and, as always, continue to spread the message of “Believing in the Impossible.”

Daniel is also a HUGE Canucks fan and the visit from Fin went a long way.

While the contest is over, please do not hesitate to send your notes of who should deserve a copy of the book. Our goal is to reach as many kids as possible.

One Sunday, June 6th I went out into the community to help two great causes. Firstly, he started the day by being one of the guest “Authors” at the Sharing-Books sponsored events for Room-to-Read. What a wonderful experience to see firsthand the power of books.

Secondly, I went out to Burnaby to attend a Kelsan who is using my experience as their message to ride the BC Ride to Conquer Cancer event this weekend. It was another great event to see the power of books and meet the many people who have inspired, but never met.

Good luck to Brian and Kevin on your ride! (As well as our own Johnathon Strebly who is also taking part in this event!)
